How buying a storage unit works

A storage facility sells everything inside a unit whose renter stopped paying. You bid on the whole unit, as photographed. Here is the whole journey in five steps.

  1. Find a unit

Browse the units for sale and look closely at the photographs. Nobody has opened the unit or listed what is inside. If you win, you get everything in it, exactly as the photographs show.

  2. Bid

Before you press anything, the auction shows what you would pay if you win: your bid plus any cleaning deposit the facility asks for. There is no buyer's fee. Bid once, or give a top price and we bid for you, never above it.

  3. If you win, pay

We send you a "You won" message. How long you then have to pay is shown on each auction, under "If you win, you must", so read it before you bid. The time only counts between 05:00 and 21:00. You pay online: Debit or credit card, Instant EFT, PayShap.

  4. Collect

Book a day inside the facility's collection hours. Many facilities only open on weekdays, so check the hours on the unit's page before you bid. Someone from the facility opens the unit with you. Check it against the photographs before you take anything out. Can't go yourself? Name the person going, with their ID number, before the day.

  5. Empty it and sign it off

Take everything out, rubbish too, and sweep it within 5 days of paying. Bring your own transport. Then you and the facility both sign the clearance record. Whether your deposit comes back, in full or in part, is up to the facility: it refunds you itself, so give it your bank details.

Before your first bid

Registering is free. Auction law asks us to know who every bidder is, so before your first bid you confirm your email address and give your ID number and address. A person at Bid Budi checks them, and then you can bid.

Every auction shows its own terms. The figures above are the usual ones. The exact deposit, deadlines and collection hours for a unit are on that unit's page, under "Before you bid, know this" and the Rules of auction tab. More questions? Read the common questions.
